Workin' hard for the money

Over a year ago, Sam came up with the idea of opening a cookie stand. He figured selling Mom's cookies would be a profitable business. We didn't ever get around to doing it. Some time around the being of May, Sam and Nathanael started running out of spending money. Though for many years Sam always saved every penny he received, they both have really come to enjoying buying things they want. With our approaching summer vacation, I told them they better be careful or they wouldn't have any money to spend in Utah. Sam brought up his year-old plan of running a cookie stand. I agreed. Every day, the boys discussed their plans. Sam's vision was a permanent stand, where we would all take shifts. I agreed to a few hours on a Saturday morning. Weeks passed. It dawned on me that we were running out of Saturdays before going on vacation. So, we decided to do it on Memorial Day. We had some discussion about ideal location for the stand, products and pricing, and hours of operation.
Determined to have the boys shoulder most of the work load, Sam was responsible for his own poster. It took him a couple days, but he got it done.

I also insisted that the boys at least make a token contribution to the baking of the cookies. They do enjoy baking with me, but only long enough to sample all of the ingredients. Once there are beaters to be licked, they are done. They helped me make the first batch and then left me to bake the remaining 3 varieties on my own.

They were so excited to have their little stand. They were eager with anticipation during the days leading up to it. And they were quite pleased with their earnings. Though their customers were mostly supportive friends and family, we did have a few neighborhood strangers who stopped by. They nearly sold out of cookies and earned $46.
