We did three experiments. The first was swirling colors. I underestimated how much food coloring I would need and didn't give adequate instructions before giving the kids their q-tip, so they mostly ended up with ugly milk, but the effect was super color at first.
Next we did elephant toothpaste. This was really cool and the kids loved it.
Last, we made slime. I know all the parents were super excited about all the glitter I sent home in this stuff. The boys played so nicely together with theirs for quite a while one evening after the party that I was able to overlook the fact that my entire downstairs was sprinkled with gold glitter afterwards.
Nathanael had a very specific idea for his cake. He found a camo cake mix at the store and he wanted the cake "covered with chocolate and a scientist picture on it". That cake would have liked to have driven me mad. I waited until the kids went to bed the night before the party, assuming I would have no problems making it. After I had baked the cake and allowed it to cool the appropriate length of time, I tried to remove the cake from the pans. The first layer came out, no problem. The second one, however, was stuck and fell apart! So, I had to go off to Walmart at some late hour to buy another mix. I assumed I hadn't sufficiently greased the pans, so I made sure to heavily grease them the second time, only to have the same problem repeat itself. Luckily, we were left with two decent layers out of each box. I covered that sucker with my usual chocolate frosting and Dad did his usual artistry for the top. We also had little ice cream cups that came in the Pepsi party pack he received for turning 6. Nathanael was pleased.
