With cousin Scarlett living temporarily nearby, Claire started spending a good amount of time with her. Spending lots of time with someone also comes with a downside. Claire picked up her first stomach virus of the season from Scarlett.
Scarlett also stayed home from daycare one day to have a full-day play-date with us. We met up with Tessa, too, at toddler time and got to see a goat.
A local Baptist church was having a rebranding celebration with bounce houses, games, food, and music. Somehow Nathanael knew about this party. He claims he got something about it at school. But in any event, he knew about it and he wanted to go. He begged to go, actually. On the day of the party, on our way home from church, we could see the preparations underway and Nathanael was very persuasive. We decided to do the out of the ordinary and go. We called Robin, and shockingly she decided to bring her kids and meet us there. The kids had a blast on the inflatables, playing games for candy, Claire got her face painted, and they got hamburgers/hot dogs/chips.
At some point in September, Paul worked out a negotiation with the company he had worked with previously in Virginia to come on board as a direct employee, finally, but remain in South Carolina and commute to the office in Virginia 2 days a week. Claire was certainly happy to take on her office assistant duties once again.
After school started back, we were still enjoying a few after school swims, but by September those days were quickly drawing to a close. But it's always exciting when the fall holiday decor starts showing up in stores!
Nathanael picks up on every event that is announced at school. From church parties, to before/after school clubs (he signed up for Running Club before school and Good News Club after school), to eat out nights, and arts competitions, he wants to do it all. When the Reflections contest was announced, he was determined to submit an entry. His first attempt didn't exactly fit the theme for the year (My Story). He later made a collage that was more appropriate and was a bit sad when all he got was an honorable mention.
Although I signed up to be Room Mom for Nathanael's class again this year, it was quickly clear that that did not mean I would be able to do any seasonal activities this year. Pretty disappointed about that, I decided I would still do seasonal activities for SOMEONE, and that someone was going to be Claire. For September we had an apple themed activity. We read stories about apples, made a tissue paper apple sun-catcher, made "apple pie" with fresh whipped cream, and played with apple pie play dough. Tessa and Claire's friend Audrey came and it was a fun play date.
Meanwhile, as I was hosting an activity for Claire, Paul was chaperoning an overnight field trip to Charleston with Sam. Paul only had Sam and his two friends, Aidan and Grant, in his group. I don't know the specifics of the trip, but the first day they spent most of their time at some sort of nature center where participated in programs and went on a boat ride. That evening they went to dinner at Golden Corral, which was a definite highlight. There was no restraint, and from what I heard, they spent most of their time at the dessert buffet, gorging on the likes of ice cream and cotton candy with reckless abandon. I'm shocked they didn't spend the rest of the night throwing up. The next day, they spent time on the Yorktown, lunched on cafeteria food (which left one of Paul's charges in tears, resulting in Paul buying him chicken tenders from a cafe), and headed back home.
